Military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external or internal authoritarian forces. First started when president truman asked the congress on March 12, 1947 for 400 Million in military and econimc assistance for greece and turkey. Trumans plan was that the ecominical aid would help prevent the spread of communisom throghout the country.

The Marshall Plan

(1948)

The Economic Recovery Act of 1948 signed by president Truman on April 3, wich was later known as the marshall plan due to the idea being propessed by George Marshall. The Marshall Plan was to restore econimic infrastructor of postwar Europe. The U.S. transferred over 13 billion in economic recovery programs to western Europe economies after WW2.

The Berlin Airlift

(June 1948 - September 1949)

The Berlin Airlift

The Berlin Airlift was a military operation that supplied West Berlin With food and other vital goods by air after the soviet union blockaded the city. The Soviet prevented any goods transportation into Berlin leaving them with a supply that would only last about 36 days for 2 million people. Once the US militay started sending in food they delivered up to 8 tons per day to keep up with the demand of

supply. The Soviets ended

the blockade mainly due to

the western embardo placed

on all strategic exports from

the Eastern bloc.

NATO

(April 4, 1949)

Formed on April 4, 1949, a security alliance between Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United KIngdom, and the United States. The signatories agreed, "an armed attack against one or more of them... shall be considered an attack against them all". the Soviet Union condemmed NATO as a warmongering alliance. NATO is still in place today with 30 independent member countries.

The Hollywood Ten

(Nov. 1947 - April 1948)

Hollywood Ten

Alvah Bessie, Herbert Biberman, Lester Cole, Edward Dmytryk, Ring Lardner, Jr., John Howard Lawson, Albert Malte, Samuel Ornitz, Adrian Scott, and Dalton Trumbo aka the hollywood ten. In Nov. 1947 they were cited for contempt of congress. These charges aroe when they refused to answer questiones posed by HUAC as to wether they were or had ever been part of the communist party. They faced trai on that charge on April 1948, in which each man was found guilty and sentenceed to a year in prison and pay a fine of 1,000.

Korean War

Korean War

War between North and South Korea. War began due to North Korea invading South Korea following cashes along the border and rebellions in South Korea. Communist South Korea wanted to secure the korean peninsula and incorporate it in a communist bloc. with the Soviet Union and China. After years of negociationa nd back and forths this came to an end when the adversaries signed an armistice with the agrement of the new boundry near the 38th parallel. This gave South Korea an extra 1,500 square miles of land and they aldo created a 2-mile-wide "demitiarized zone" that still exists today.

Warsaw Pact

Warsaw Pact

The Warsaw Pact or also known as the Treaty of Warsaw. A cooperation and mutual assiatnce signed on May 14, 1955, in Warsaw, Poland. This treaty was signed inbetween the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania. The Warsaw Pact was seen as the eastern block of the wolrd while NATO and its countires was seen as the western block. Albania wihdrew in 1968 and this pact dissovled on july 1, 1991 after East Germany left this treaty.

War between communits North Vietnam against South Vietnam and their principle ally The United States. After WW2 Japan withdrew forces from Vietnam leaving it to the French-educated emperor Bao Dai in contro. Seeing the opportunity Ho's viet forces immeditaly rose up taking control of Northern cirt of Haboi and declaring a Democratic Republic of Vietnam(DRV) with Ho as president. Both Bao and Ho wanted a unified Vietnam but Ho wanted a natione modeled after communist countries. ON the ther hand Bao wanted a Vietnam with close economic and cultural ties wih the west. Throughout the beginning of the war the United States helped South Vietnamwith the beliefe in wat is known as the domino effect...

The House of Un-Americans Activites Committee (HUAC)

(1950 - 1954)

HUAC

A goverment agebcy founded in 1938. This was an investigative committee of the United States House of Representatives. They came mainly into play between 1950 and 1954 when "McCarthyism" described as the practice of accusing Federal Government employees of having affiliation with communism and leaking inoformation. This lead to governement employees being black listed and losing their jobs. Through this time U.S. citizens felt sense of uncertainty. Many thought HUAC and McCarthysm was necessary to secure national security but many others felt like their personl freedoms were being taken away.
