THE HAITIAN REVOLUTION

The Revolution Begins

The slaves, led by former slave Toussaint l'Overture, would take the initiative by going/acting against the planters.

The French and British arrive

The invasion of Haitia ( Santo Domingo) to prevent the slaves from rebelling.

Action is taken

On May 4th 1794, L'Ouverture sides with the French and changes the course of the war. Making it the most succesful slave rebellion in history.

L'OUVETURE

After proving worthy of being a good general to the French army he was declared governor. The colony's surviving civil commissioners submit to Louverture, strengthening his position as the most powerful person in Saint-Domingue. Louverture, on the other hand, makes a mistake, and instead of winning popularity overseas, his daring scares the French, and he is rapidly viewed as a big threat.

Taking Control

L'Ouveture takes control over Haiti (Saint Domingue).

Louverture is named Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the colony. He and his army of ex-slaves become the main forces in Saint Domingue( Haiti ) and he proceeds to establish what is a military style leaderhip. He has a 20,000-man army at his side which makes him a force to reconned with.

Napoleon sends his spies

Napoleon's brother-in-law "General Victor-Emmanuel Leclerc" is dispatched to Saint-Domingue to reinstate slavery and the Code Noir. While he is there he observes the extent of L'Ouverture's power and reports to Napoleon.

The End

The French take off/evacute because of the lack of weapns and diseases gained by soldiers. They have lost 5,000 men
