AIR POLLUTION

It is caused when

What is it ?

high levels of pollutants are suspended in the air and reach a dangerous concentrations

e.g Soot, smoke, pollen, methane, and carbon dioxide

It can occur naturally or by people

Effects on the health of people

Those at risk

-Aggravated cardiovascular and respiratory illness

-added stress to heart and lungs

-damaged cells in the respiratory system

-accelerated aging of lungs

-decreased lung function

-increased risk of cancer

-development of diseases such as asthma

-shortened life span

People with lung conditions e.g asthma

infants and young children

the elderly

People with heart conditions

People who lack access to health care

Unborn babies

Effects on people

Environmental Impacts

E.g Global warming - resulting in many consequences - rising sea levels, flooding, extinction of species etc

Depletion of the ozone layer - which protects us from UV radiation

Effects on the environment

Acid rain - which is a huge threat to marine life, and human well being - less of an issue in Australia but this could change

Eutrophication- pollutants such as nitrogen oxide speeds up the growth of algae on the water surface. Blocking oxygen for marine life.

and many more

In Australia air pollution is more of a problem then we think

Every year over 3000 people die as a result and the number is increasing

World wide an estimated 4.6 millions deaths per year

How serious is it

How can we reduce our impact

-Use alternatives to driving - public transport, car pooling, walking

-Mulch or compost grass, leaves and food scraps - for every kg of food waste that goes to landfill 3.8 kg of greenhouse gasses is emitted

Reduce your impact

-promote or support community sustainability projects

-keep car tires fully inflated and avoiding idling - having the car partially on

-Look for ENERGY STAR labels when buying appliances.

-drying clothes outside, turning lights off when not in use , as well as growing gardens and planting trees
