The Long Rain

Summary

"The Long Rain" is a short story by science fiction author Ray Bradbury. This story was originally published in 1950 as "Death-by-Rain" in the magazine Planet Stories, and then in the collection The Illustrated Man. The story tells of four men who have crashed on a planet where it is always raining. As they try to reach the safety of the Sun Domes, they end up being driven insane by the endless rains.

Analysis of symbols and figurative language

  • The Sun Domes represents hope and safety.

The fake sun in them represents the real one, whichs brings joy and happiness to everyone.

  • The Rain is a symbol for sadness and struggle

Theme

The main theme is the struggle for sanity in an insane situation. The rain is unending and doesn't allow the men a moment of peace or calm.However, nature when tamed is humanity's tool. In that sense, the sun represents life, which ties into a related sub-theme: the power of the human will to survive on faith.

When Chile's San Jose mine collapsed on August 5, 2010, people around the world were fixated on the fate of the 33 miners trapped 2,300 feet underground.

The miners would end up spending 69 days below the Earth's surface before rescuers brought them all to safety. As everyone celebrated the rescue of the 33 miners, many pointed to a higher power a 34th miner who they say was with them all along.

In the aftermath of the rescue, during their time underground and credited God with protecting them. God, many of them say, was the 34th miner.od
