The Republic of Gilead had an intimidating punishment used against whoever was not following them, men and women were executed through a death penalty called ´Salvaging´.

The Republic of Gilead had an intimidating punishment us...

In Salvaging,

In Salvaging, the executions of women are held in public by the Aunts, and the Handmaids have to sit near the stage where the 'Salvagings' take place and are forced to participate. While in men´s executions; a man is literally torn or beaten to death by Handmaids.

The term ‘Salvaging’ comes from the religious term ‘Salvation’ meaning “the state

of being saved from sin or evil.” also ´Salvation´ in history is the pattern of specific events in human history in which God clearly reveals his presence

and saving action.

The Republic of Gilead started originally

as religious extremists who believed that America needed to be 'saved' from sin; just as Jesus suffered and died for our sins. But on the contrary the Salvaging executions happening by Gilead actually has a different effect, where instead of saving these people from their sins; they are being killed. In the story; the Commanders actually think that killing men and women who are not following their commands will save them from their sins.

The Republic of Gilead

As the Origins of the word

´Salvage' comes from a French/Latin word (salvare) meaning ‘to save’, it is quite strange and ironic that this

specific word was used by the government of

The Republic of Gilead to name the execution of people who are not safe from this government.
