A conundrum is a confusing or difficult problem/question. It is often presented as a riddle, the answer to which involves a pun or play on words.

Origin: First heard in the 1590s as a slang word for "pedant", "whim", and later "riddle, puzzle". Perhaps the sort of ponderous mock-Latin word that was once the height of humor. The spelling of conundrum changed as it used to be spelled "quonundrum".
