Chordate definition

Chordate definition

Being a chordate means you have a backbone, and the

axolotl has one too.

Class

Amphibia

Amphibia is the class of all of the amphibians, inlcuding the axolotl.

Being an amphibian means that you could breath or live underwater or on land.

Amphibia: Am-fib-ia

Phylum: f-eye-lum

Chordate: Core-day-t

Caudata: Core-da-ta

Carl Linnaeus: Car-l Lin-ay-us

Order

Caudata is the order of the Axolotl.

This means it is part of the salamander order.

Some other salamanders are newts, Fire bellied newts, pacific giants salamander, olm and the mole salamander.

Salamanders have a lizard-like appearance and they are all amphibians.

Order

Yawning?

All animals yawn, but pictures of the axolotl yawning look wierd and unnatural, and that is why I'm putting it on.

Don't worry, it's normal.

Yawning?

Family

Ambystomatidae, the family the axolotl belongs to, is the salamander family.

Family

Salamanders usually have four legs and a sleek tail.

In The Wild

The only location where you can find a wild axolotl is in the lake of Xochimilco

In The Wild

Genus

Ambystoma is the only type of genus for Ambystomatidaes, so this is where I will put the axolotl.

This means that they are part of the Mole Salamander Genus.

Mole Salamanders usually have protective skin, since they are amphibians.

Genus

Food

I bet you though this was about what it eats, didn't you?

Food

You can eat axolotls, but please don't, this little guy is critically endagered.

Species

Axolotls were specially bred to be white.

Axolotls don't have eye-lids.

The axolotl can breath through either it's gills or its skin.

Species

Axolotls are carnivores, so

they sometimes eat other axolotls if they are "small in size."(Website: soft schoolAxolotl facts)

Axolotls can re-grow limbs, including it's heart and lungs.

The estimate of wild axolotls

is approximately 1000.

Food

Now this IS about what it eats.

Food

Axolotls eat insects, small fish, worms and just about anything.

They eat the food whole.

Carl Linnaeus

Carl Linnaeus is known as 'the inventor of the classification system'.

He was born of the 23 of May 1707, and died on the 10th of Janurary 1778. He lived in Småland, Sweden.

He revolutionised the way of classification, as he replaced the old complicated inefficient way with the new method that we still use today.

His work has been immensely useful for classifying organisms, as it allowed organisms that went through metamorphosis to be classified in the same groups, and changed the old one to be more efficient.
