Basketball is a complicated sport which many people can not play, but it is very easy. Two teams, one ball, two hoops, more than 5 people on each team, and about 3 coaches on each team. There are 4 quarters of a game, which separate it. There are five quarters, and those are POINT GUARDS, POWER FORWARDS, CENTERS, SHOOTING GUARD, and SMALL FORWARD. Each quarter is any time long, and after one is done, you go to the next quarter. IF YOU'RE DONE WITH 2 QUARTERS, YOU GO ONTO HALFTIME, which is any time long. After halftime, there are two more quarters of any time length, and then the game is over. Whoever scores the most wins the game.
FREE THROWS!
Free throws are key to most rules. They are a part of fouling which you will learn about later. The type of foul decides how many free throws someone gets. Each free throw will count for one point, and on the last shot, anyone can get the ball. If it is not the last one, then your team can not take the ball and you will have to give it back to the person shooting. Time to get into the rules, and we will start with the most common rule that happens so much in the NBA(National Basketball Association).
1. Out Of Bounds!
Out of bounds in basketball is really simple. There are 4 black lines painted around the court. If you step outside of any of the black lines, your team will lose the ball and have to give the ball to the other team. That's all out of bounds is.
2. Traveling!
Traveling is really easy to understand. You have to bounce the ball between every two steps. If you do not bounce the ball between both of those steps, it is called a travel and the ball goes to the other team.
3. Double Dribbling
Double Dribbling is the closest thing surely towards traveling. This is the way it works. You know how you have to dribble the ball every two steps, well you can pick it up and not bounce it. If you do this, then you either have to pass the ball, or shoot it. One catch though, if you bounce it again, it becomes the other teams ball.
4. Fouling!
Fouling is also known as illegal contact. It is where if you touch someone by elbowing, tripping, slapping, etc. If any of these things are made by a team, the other team shoots 2 free throws. If it is a serious hit, then the person who it happened to gets three free throws. If they get injured so bad and have to leave or go to the hospital, then there is a good chance the person who hit him will get Ejected(not be able to play the game anymore) or suspended.
Basketball
originated from Springfield College,(YMCA) in a gymnasium, young college students had to find an indoor activity because the football season had ended. The gymnasium had not much, until someone made something new.
James Naismith was the instructor. He was 31 and graduated from Presbyterian College in Montreal with a theology degree for his love of sports. He went to Springfield for physical education to continue his academic learning.
A kid named Gulick though decided that they should have something new. He was one of the small reasons why basketball was created. The reason he said this is because they only had marching, calisthenics, and apparatus work. Because it was winter, they could not do the other sports such as football and lacrosse.
Naismith then had gone to work. He wanted to make a game that was easy to take in, but hard enough to where it was actually an interesting game. He had also wanted it to be playable almost anywhere, a large number of players, plenty of exercise, but most of all, not much roughness. Without the roughness of football, soccer, or rugby since those would threaten bruises and broken bones, it was going to be playable even for 7 year old.
He was looking for 2 18-inch square boxes for the goals. He had gone to the janitor, but the janitor had instead brought 2 peach baskets. He nailed them both to the rails of the gymnasium balcony to where they had been 10 feet high up. Some man was then put each end of the balcony to put the ball back into play. After this, he came up with rules which described moving the ball and how the ball goes to the other team. Once a referee was chosen, the game would be divided into two halves which had 15 minutes in each of them, with a resting time in between of 5 minutes. Once the rules were posted on the bulletin board, the gym class met, and the teams were chosen with three centers, three forwards, and three guards on both team. Two centers would meet at the center court(half court), Naismith tossed it into the air to see which team started with it. Then, the game "Basket ball" was created.
The new game got out at the speed of a cheetah(found out by many people very quickly). A couple weeks after it was tested for the first time, students introduced it at their own YMCA. Basketball was even introduced to foreign nations. Soon, every high school and college introduced the game. In 1905, Basketball had become a permanent winter sport. The rules were changed a little bit, but most of the rules had stayed the exact same way Naismith made them.
Now you know the history of basketball. Go onto the next page where you will learn about famous people.
Here you will find out about the most famous basketball players. There are many good players, some are alive, and sadly, some are dead. The most recent one to die is sadly Kobe Bryant. He sadly died in a helicopter crash. Although, there are so many other good players. some good players are
LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, James Harden, and Shaquille O'Neil, and many others.
