To begin, Gilgamesh is 2/3rd god and 1/3 human. Gilgamesh was a summarian king of Uruk, an ancient summerian city. And he was a very arrogant king who was always eager for fame. So the Gods and the Goddesses wanted to create a difficult obstacle for Gilgamesh to battle. So the Goddess Aruru decided to make someone called Enkidu to create a challenge for Gilgamesh. The two men become heated and have a wrestling match and Gilgamesh wins but both men become faithful friends. This is when the arrogance came out of Gilgamesh. He wanted to make a name for himself, so the two set off to try to fight Humbaba the giant who guards the cedar forest.
In an attempt to destroy Humbaba, Gilgamesh and Enkidu embark on a journey. Because Gilgamesh wanted to be known by all people. When they reached the cedar forest, Enkidu became scared, while Gilgamesh was prepared. Gilgamesh told Enkidu to throw away all of his fear and fight. As a result, they engaged in a battle with Humbaba and then was viciously murdered with a sword in the neck after 3 blows he died even after he pleaded for mercy. Gilgamesh brought Humbaba's head before the Gods and one in particular, Enlil who created Humbaba. They put the head before him and he got angry.
After Gilgamesh and Enkidu killed Humbaba, they were sent on another quest to kill the bull of Heaven. In a dream, Enkidu sees that the gods have decreed his death as a result of helping to kill Humbaba and the bull. Enkidu describes the dream he has about the heavens roaring and the earth rumbeling and then an awful being with a somber-faced man bird with a vampire face was standing over him and the creature led him to the palace of Irkalla where he was in a dark dusty place in his nightmare-dream. After the dream, Enkidu knew that his death was certain. In his sickness, Enkidu was sick for 12 days with Gilgamesh beside him until he died.
Gilgamesh’s journey to find immortality
After seeing a maggot fall out of Enkidu's nose Gilgamesh realizes he doesn't want to die and he was scared of death. So Gilgamesh wanted to embark on a journey to find a guy named Utnapishtim who had survived the flood centuries before, he had immortality. Gilgamesh wanted to find out how Utnapishtim became immortal and if it was possible for Gilgamesh him self to become immortal as well. Which leads to the sleep test.
Gilgamesh talks to Utnapishtim wanting to become immortal after his journey, Utnapishtim asks him if he thinks he is worthy of becoming a god and immortality. then he told Gilgamesh as a test, he needs to go a week without sleeping. After accepting the challenge, Gilgamesh fell asleep and failed. Utnapishtim says if Gilgamesh wakes up then he will denie that he was asleep. For proof Utnapishtim tells his wife to bake a piece of bread each day, for proof that he was sleeping. After the week Utnapishtim woke Gilgamesh and Gilgamesh said that he never fell asleep. Then Utnapishtim showed him the from the first day hard and dry, the second one a little moist the third one soggy and moldy, the fourth one moldy, the fourth one starting to get moldy, the sixth one a little stale, and then the seventh piece of bread was fresh on the coals. Gilgamesh was upset that he couldn't escape death and lost the challenge.
After Gilgamesh had failed the sleep test Utnapishtims wife told Gilgamesh about a plant that would give him a youthful look because he could have immortality. She said it was a plant that grows underwater, like a rose, that will would your hands but restore youth. Gilgamesh tied rocks to his feet and went and got the plant but decided he wanted a bath so he laid the plant down and a serpent smelled the plant and came and ate it. The serpent received the youth instead of Gilgamesh. Realizing what had happened Gilgamesh cried because he knew he would grow old and die.
Gilgamesh travels home with nothing to show for his journey. He carved his story into the walls of his city Uruk. Gilgamesh's journey paid off the thought because he may not have received immortality but he got to see the countries of the world and he had gotten wise about things during his journey he saw mysteries and discovered secret things like the plant. Gilgamesh was also able to help share the story of the flood given by Utnapishtims he may not have gotten immortality but the story of his accomplishments and achievements are still shared today.
