Reid technique vs Peace Model

Reid Technique

The Reid Technique involves three components – factual analysis, interviewing, and interrogation. This is then followed by the 9 steps of interrogation.

Interrogation “should only occur when the investigator is reasonably certain of the suspect's involvement in the issue under investigation.” There are nine steps to the Reid interrogation technique.

Developed in early 1990s by law enforcement and psychologists in England and Wales.

  • Non accusatory and information gathering unlike the Reid technique.

  • Decreases the possibility of false confessions

  • Studies show strong evidence of poor questioning methods, inadequate interpersonal skills, deficient support for trainers, poor quality control of interviews

  • PEACE Model is effective in reducing false confessions.
  • Peace Method is starting to get recognized by the US.
  • Reid technique is used in many police departments and is viewed as an effective method in detecting deceitful behavior.
  • Reid technique does have a reputation for obtaining falce confessions.
