The types of crimes Stocks was used to deal with was public intoxication, blasphemy, fortune telling, arson and slave escape. The main reason for the use of stocks was the humiliation of the punishment as it was intended to deter the community and the offender from committing the crime.

Stocks was a popular form of punishment in Medieval Europe because it could serve as a sort of corporal punishment as well as a public humiliation punishment as well.
Do you think this type of punishment was too lenient or too harsh in dealing with these crimes? Make a judgement.
In my opinion, I think that this punishment was a bit too harsh in dealing the crimes I have listed above as they aren’t that bad compared to other crimes like murder and the offender being publicly humiliated as well as losing their arm and feet would make it almost impossible for them to find a job which could very well end them in homelessness.
The executioner of the time would usually carry out the stocks punishment by putting the one who is guilty in the wooden device and would bring down the blade on the persons arms and feet.
The punishment of stocks was mainly used on primarily escaped slaves and working-class people during medieval Europe.

The things that would be involved in stocks is they would put a wooden device which had foot holes and a hole for the hands, and they would drop a metal blade unto you slicing your arms and foot clean through.
