What is it?
Magnetostratigraphy is a field within stratigraphy that studies the magnetic characteristics of rock bodies. If the magnetic properties of rocks have measurable differences stratigraphically, that is, from one strata to the next, those differences can be used to identify their relationships and identify varying stratigraphic units.
The Magnetostratigraphy uses records of changes in polarity of the geomagnetic field preserved in sedimentary sequences to correlate between wells and to date the sediment.

- On a regional scale,magnetopolarity stratigraphy can be use for dating and duration assesssments of sequences and individual information.
- On local oil field scale , magnetostratigraphy may be used to strengthen a reservoir zonation that aims at locating potential hydrocarbon pathways and provides information for sand colume calculation
