Nothing is ever truly private.
No matter how hard you try, some people just wont like you.
Throughout the book Lizzie's privacy is snatched away from her once she became a strong suspect in the case. For example the Borden house was constantly searched at the beginning. However, Lizzie's room was not searched after she had asked them not too. However, when they started suspecting her the police went against her wishes and searched her room.
The Borden Murders pg 44 "it is no use in searching this room." She said nobody can get in here or put anything in. I always lock my door when i leave, how long will it take you?"
At first, Lizzie's wishes for her room not to be searched were respected. however after she became a suspect they were snatched. so she never really had any privacy.
This theme appears more then once in The Borden murders. First with the stepmother Mrs.Borden, no matter how hard she tried to be that mother figure for Lizzie. Nothing seemed to work and Lizzie didn't particularly care for her. Also with Lizzie, altho her having a naturally good reputation. Some people still described her as having an "ugly" personality. however today we will be focusing on the old Mrs.Borden.
The Borden Murders pg 80 "were your relations towards her that of mother and daughter? " "in some ways it was and some ways it was not" "in what ways was that?""i decline to answer"................ "in what ways was it not", " altho she came when i was young i did not call her mother."
Lizzie never calling her mother is important way of showing how she looked at Mrs.Borden, despite her being there since she was little she didn't respect her as a mother!
During the trial the newspapers continued to spread false information about the trial.
Lizzie had different reputations with different people.
This Borden case was in a small town and with Lizzie's interesting reputation the town soon became divided. With the magazines constantly coming out with more "proof" of Lizzie's guilt the newspapers had a great effect on the trials.
on pg 113 of The Borden Murders the text says, "It is hardly necessary to say that the published story's of the proceedings are very incomplete and fragmentary, perhaps some of them mythical."
" Increased by the rumors Lizzie's friend Mrs.Brigham told the fall river herald "the story that she would not sit at the same table with her father is a false hood of the blackest sort."
This proves that the lies spread by the news paper had effects on people, in fact enough effects so that Lizzie's friend had to come out and prove them wrong.
Lizzie's solid reputation was beginning to crack. It seemed the more people the officers asked the more different personality's Lizzie's had
Some described her as "strong willed" like on pg 26 of The Borden murders others described her as "very bad tempered" like on pg 27 of The Borden Murders.
Lizzie's faltering reputation between different people, just ended up putting serious doubt o her innocence making it an important part of the book.
Environmental Issues.
Gender Issues.
Now since this Borden incident happened in such a small town, news from the papers or magazines spread faster then ever. This effects the plot because theirs even a time where people pile up outside the court room await the verdict of the trial. If this was Not in such a small town, hype made by newspapers probably wouldn't have such a huge effect.
On pg 127 of the Borden Murders, the text states. "On august 25, the very same day the hearing opened, a story more incriminating than any courtroom evidence claimed headlines all across new England."
Those quotes are important, and it proves the newspaper had a great effect since the story claimed all headlines everywhere across New England. It shows the newspaper had a great effect And, since it was more incriminating the the court room evidence the papers had the power to change the verdict.
now, we all know Lizzie is woman however, Because of this lots of people placed doubt of the fact if she actually did it. Back then they figured women were just incapable or were not smart enough to pull off two distinct murders. This effected the plot because a good chunk of people actually came out with support of Lizzie's innocence, without it the whole thing probably would've been all one sided.
On page 141 of The Borden Murders, the text states".......They squabbled over Lizzie's treatment in jail. Some sneered at what they believed to be her many privileges; others had her "shivering in the chilliness of her temporary tomb, wrapped in shawls for comfort"
As you can see some thought she was being treated with privileges as she awaits trial, others believed she was a sitting duck in a freezing tomb awaiting her death. however, both these claims are based on her being a woman. Because she was a women they felt she was being treated differently, because she was a women they felt she should be comfortable.
Lizzie vs investigator.
through out the questioning Lizzie was being particularly difficult giving answers by the letter and nothing further. This however, ended up being her downfall because this put doubt on her innocence in the eyes of the police.
on page 87 in The Borden Murders the text states ."again and again, Lizzie's answers were infuriatingly terse and matter-of-fact. she answered questions literally to the letter and not further, even when giving more information would've been her best interest."
This proves that there was silent arguments between Lizzie and the investigator with her answers. This helped me understand that the author doubted Lizzie because of her answers because she described them as "infuriating".
To inform.
To entertain.
I know the author wants to inform us about the Borden case because throughout the book, the author places information we would need for background.
In The Borden Murders on pg 212 "I found Lizzie Borden's hatchet! the cry came form the roof of john cowers barn just behind the Borden's yard"
So, that quote came from an random insert into the book the author made, in the book. The author also includes pictures and background information, the author adds this so we have an easier understanding of what shes trying to tell us about the Borden murders. she cannot inform us if we don't know what shes talking about. For example, when talking about the house she included a detailed blueprint of the home. This also proves she wanted us to understand well about the Borden murders situation.
Believe it or not, theirs evidence even on the front cover of the book that proves the author wants this book to be entertaining.
From the front and back cover of The Borden Murders "like a historical version of law and order...........a riveting, chilling, jigsaw puzzle of a story.......sure to be a hit with true crime fans everywhere"
Those quotes support my claim because the author describes the book an historical version of law and order, A TV SHOW. If the author wants her readers to read this book like an law and order script, she wants to entertain them!
