Bollywood and gender roles

Our focus:

To identify the role of Indian cinema in the construction of gender and sexuality

How?

By looking at the portrayal of men and women in Bollywood and the role it plays in reinforcing gender roles and patriarchal values

Theoretical frameworks of media we used to analyse our results:

  • Uses and gratification model
  • Cultural effects model

Research

Prelimenary Secondary Research

Prelimenary Secondary Research

Our focus:

To identify the role of Indian cinema in the construction of gender and sexuality.

How we did it

We analysed different aspects of Bollywood, such as song lyrics and movie plots, and tried identifying any present patterns of stereotyped masculinity and femininity.

What we found

We found multiple instances of sexism and gender sterotyping so we moved on to our second phase of research to see how powerfuly Bollywood injects these values within its audience.

Primary Research

Aim:

To uncover how these sexist ideas have been internalised by South Asian society and how this internalisation hinders the ability of the audience to identify underlying the patriarchal elements we speak of.

Primary Research

Methodology:

  • Survey/ Questionairre
  • Semi structured interviews,

Semi Structured Interviews:

Semi Structured Interviews:

We asked them about their thoughts on:

  • The ideal woman
  • Item songs
  • Male Female Interaction
  • Occupational Status

Findings and Analysis

Predominant trends:

  • Initial assumptions challenged
  • Class and age did not seem to inform views
  • Educational background
  • Gender

How can this be analyzed through our theoretical framework?

  • Hypodermic Syringe Model
  • Cultural Effects Model

Limitations of this Research

Limitations

  • Language barrier
  • Those who don't watch Bollywood films were excluded
  • Interviewees were intrigued by why we were conducting this research
  • Research sample was not as diverse as we would have liked as we only had easy access to individuals who had phones and computers and the sample was largely filled by young people (15-30 years )
