Generic Name: insulin glargine

Lantus Onset and Peak (Pharmacodynamics)

Classification

Onset: 1-2 hours for insulin to start working in the body

Peak: There is no peak for insulin glargine

Duration: Insulin lasts 24 hours in the body

Adverse Effects

Side Effects

Administering to much insulin can lead to hypoglycemia, which then leads to a rapid heart rate, palpitations, confusion, sweating and visual changes.

Administer food with sugar such as candy or orange juice if a patient becomes hypoglycemic.

Lantus works by controlling how sugar is used and stored in your body. Insulin binds to sugar receptors. It increases the amount of sugar ypur muscles use, helps to store sugar in fat and stops your liver from making sugar.

Action of Lantus

Action

Insulin glargine promotes the cellular uptake of glucose, and converts glucose into glycogen and promotes energy storage.

Therapeutic Effect

Therapeutic use is to control hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) in type 1 and type 2 diabetics

Administer Insulin subcutaneously into either the deltoid or the abdomen.

Lantus is administered one time a day, which is at bedtime

  • Follow instructions for proper administration techniques
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, and be aware of self-treatment measures if these occur
  • Consult with health care professionals if feeling ill
