History

In the beginning

The first communal space built was the Zeta Psi housing at UC Berkeley in the 1870s.

Dorm construction saw a shift after the GI Bill, in loco parentis was not wanted and high-rise dorms increased.

By the 1920s and 30s, dorms became places where deans and other administrators acted in loco parentis and transformed children into adults.

The first dorms were necessary because local rooming houses were at capacity..

Michael Minger who?

Minger vs. Green

May 1999

Minger V. Green

Michael's mom, Gail, filed a complaint on the basis of diversity jurisdiction. Her claim was against David Wilson (Associate Director of Housing) and Joseph Green (Director of Public Safety). She claimed that she called Wilson on Sept 14 to inquire about a fire on Sept 13 in Hester College and wasn't given all of the information necessary to determine the safety of her son. Her claim was that Wilson negligently misrepresented the cause of the Sept 13th fire by not mentioning the suspected cause of arson.

The ruling and after

MSU agreed to pay $200,000 to settle the civil rights lawsuit. The Minger family was seeking $3-$4 million.

Ruling and After

The Minger case was set in the Contemporary/Modern era of Higher Ed which also includes 9/11 and the housing/mortgage crash.

A look back

Let's take a look:

Theory

Foundational Theory:

Moral Development

Chickering's Identity Development

Integrative Theory:

Self-Authorship

Moral Development

3 Levels: pre-conventional, conventional, post-conventional

Moral Development

Moral reasoning develops through 6 stages.

Pre-conventional- societal rule and expectations are not understood. Perspective is concrete and individually focused.

Conventional- "Member of society"- identification with rules and expectations of others

Post-Conventional- "prior to society"- separation from rules and expectations of others to base decisions on self-chosen principles

Breakdown

7 Vectors

Chickering's theory is not linear. Individuals move through the vectors at different rates, but the vectors do build on each other.
