Egypt Being Colonized

  • September of 1882 Britain colonized Egypt, But befor that many others did to, such as France, Northern Sudan, and Syria

The Ottoman Empire was deteriorating so, it gave plunty of opportunities for new places to take over land, such as Britain and France. Once Britain had around 45% of the Suez Canal they started bringing colonists to the captial of Egypt.

  • Wanted pussetion of the Suez Canal to help tavel to India and China
  • To have a higher value in geopolitics
  • For valuable Egyptian artifacts
  • To have the Nile river for growing crops

The Good

  • During WW I and II Egypt was protected by Britain
  • It gave the Egyptains a chance to repay there debts to Britain
  • They became very open to diffrent cultures, religions, and races

The Bad

  • With 1/5 of Egypt's caital being European, racial arguments would occurre
  • Do to these disputes on June 11 blood shed started, they called thses out burstes anti- Chritsian riot. Durring this riot 50 European's and 250 Egyptian's were killed
  • Egyptains leaned on the British for governmental stability, so when they were decolonized they didn't know how to run a stable goverment alone

What started it?

  • The Egyptain people were not liking how they were being teaded by Britain
  • The taxes were very high, so they were always trying to pay off debts, but Britain would almost never use this money to help Egypt or the Suez Canal. Instead, Britain would make Egypt take care of the canal and up there taxes more and more to the point were Egyptians could only pay for what was necessary such as food and water.
  • Britain was also violating Egyptian's basic human rights by:
  • Working them passed there limit
  • Discriminating agenst Egyptians

How did Britain Feel?

  • Didn't want to let go of the Suez Canal, but they didn't have the resources to keep Egypt as a colony. So, they started threatening the people with military advancements

The End of the British Empire

  • Egypt gained independence from Britian in 1956 at the end of the Anglo-Egptian war where the last British troop left do to the Anglo-Egptian Agreemant.
  • After Britain having control of Egypt the new goverment decided to have a Repuplican based country.
  • Egypt did have problums trying to remake a stable, independent country. They didn't know how to run a goverment with out someone's help and they struggled with financial stability.
