Journey through the

Industrial Revolution

By Alana Taylor

The Idea

The idea of the automobile was first recorded in 760 BC, but has been around long before then.

Many designs and elementary engines were developed, but the first true automobile was not created until the Industrial Revolution.

Steam Engine

Savery invents steam engine to help coal production

By 1860, 80% of factories use steam power.

During the Industrial Revolution, there was a large demand on coal, but mine flooding thwarted production. In 1698, Thomas Savery invented the steam engine to quickly pump out the flood water.

In 1718, James Watt significantly improves the steam engine and it is later adapted to be used in factory machines. Now, factories can be made anywhere because they do not need rivers for water power.

Therefore, the steam engine was not originally developed for automobiles, but to satisfy Industrial Revolution production needs.
