Jacob Grimm (1785-1863) Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859)Their father's death in 1796 (when Jacob was eleven and Wilhelm was ten) caused great poverty for the family and affected the brothers for many years after. Both brothers attended the University of Marburg, where they developed a curiosity about German folklore, which grew into a lifelong dedication to collecting German folk tales. The Brothers Grimm represented a pure form of national literature and culture. Between 1812 and 1857 their first collection was revised and republished many times, growing from 86 stories to more than 200. In addition to writing and modifying folk tales, the brothers wrote collections of well-respected Germanic and Scandinavian mythologies.

The Brothers Grimm

The story written by the Brothers grimm. Rapunzel's story is about a couple who wished for a child. While the woman was pregnant, she had a strong craving for rampion, which happened to grow in her neighbor's yard. Frequently, her husband would sneak into the yard to get some rampion for his wife. Once he was discovered, he was forced to promise their child to Dame Gothel, their next-door neighbor. Dame Gothel locked their daughter Rapunzel in a tower that can only be accessed by scaling Rapunzel's long, golden lock. One day, the king's son comes across the tower and figures out how to get inside. He meets Rapunzel, and they fall in love. When the Dame learns of it, she banishes Rapunzel to the desert and chops off her hair, where she gives birth to twins. The Dame blinds the son of the king as well, but he eventually finds Rapunzel and is healed. They live happily ever after..

Rumpelstiltskin

The tale of Rumpelstiltskin is well known to many people because it has long been a beloved children's tale. The king is told by a miller that his daughter can turn straw into gold, which is obviously a complete hoax. The king is curious about this girl and demands to meet her. He then puts her in a chamber and threatens to kill her if she doesn't change the straw into gold. Fortunately, she receives assistance from a small creature-like man three times for her firstborn and once for her necklace and ring. As she gets older she  marries the king, and when their first child is born, the little man appears. He offers her the chance to keep her child if she can discover his name within three days. On the third day, someone overhears him say his name and informs the Queen that he is Rumpelstiltskin. Out of anger he tears himself in two!

Little red riding hood.

The young girl travels across the forest to bring food to her sickly grandmother. Her mother had given her explicit instructions to follow the path. A wolf in pursuit desires to consume both the girl and the food in the basket. He asks as to her destination. She informs him. He advises her to choose some flowers to give her grandmother, which she does. While waiting, he enters the grandmother's home by impersonating Little Red Riding Hood. The granny is fully swallowed by him. The girl arrives and sees that her grandmother has a really weird appearance. "What a deep voice you have!" she exclaims. "The better to greet you with," responds the wolf. "Goodness, what enormous eyes you have," the wolf remarks, "the better to see you with." What large hands you have, too! "The better to embrace you with," responds the wolf. What a large mouth you have! The wolf replies, "The better to eat you with!" The wolf then leaps out of the bed and devours her as well. Then he falls asleep. With the help of an axe, a woodcutter cuts open the sleeping wolf. Little Red Riding Hood and her grandma make it out of the woods unscathed.
