Problem and Solution

Problem and Solution

Problem

Problem

There are two main problems in this book. The first is that Greg has been punished for damaging school property and the police are looking for him.

The other problem in this book is that Greg's family is stuck in their house because of a blizzard. Greg's dad did not even make it home because of the blizzard. He is staying at a hotel. During the blizzard a lot of bad things happen, such as their basement floods and they lose power.

The worst part is that all this is happening around Christmas time when Greg is trying to stay on the nice list.

Solution

Solution

The solution of the problem is that they have to wait until the storm passes and the snowplow comes. Greg's dad then returns home with food and the power comes back on.

After the blizzard, Greg begins shoveling snow to see if he received his Giving Tree present. Even though he finds nothing somehow Greg's picture appears in the newspaper as the do-gooder who shoveled snow so the homeless people could get food from the shelter. Greg went from being in trouble to a hero.

Beginning, Middle and End

Beginning

In the beginning of the book Greg is worried about the holidays. He wants to stay on the nice list. He becomes obsessed with playing a video game and wants his mom to give him money for more coins to play the video game as well as to buy holiday gifts. His mom refuses to give him money, so Greg tries to make his own money by selling a signed book and by shoveling a driveway. When this does not work Greg and Rowley decide to create their own fundraiser.

Middle

Middle

Greg and Rowley make posters for their fundraiser but the posters becomes wet and smears and stains the school's walls. Rowley turns Greg in and Greg cleans the school's walls but the plice leave a note saying they will be back to look into this more.

End

End

A surprise blizzard hits and Greg's family is stuck inside. Greg's dad does not make it home in time and ends up staying at a hotel. The power and electricity go out and the family struggles with little food, lots of drama and a flooded basement. Greg discovers that Manny turned all the circuits in their house to off except for his room. Once Greg turns the circuits back on, the electricty and heat return. A little bit later, Greg's dad calls and says the snowplows have cleared the roads and he comes home with food.

Greg decides to go out and see if he received his Giving Tree present at church. Since the church parking lot is covered in snow, Greg shovels it to get to where he thinks his present is located. Even though Greg does not get his Giving Tree present, Greg ends up on the front page of the newspaper as a do-gooder and a hero.

Main Idea

Main Idea

The main idea of this book is that Greg gets in trouble at school for hanging posters advertising his and Rowley's fundraiser. Even the police get involved but then a surprise blizzard hits Greg's town and they have to figure out how to survive while trapped together. Somehow Greg even finds his way out of trouble during the blizzard.

R, R and O

I would rate this book a 4/5 .

R, R and O

I would recommend this book to people who like an easy read and like to laugh. The book keeps the reader guessing and entertained throughout. While it is helpful if you have read the other books in the series it is not required.

I also like how the book had lessons in it. For example, being grateful for the things you have and owning up to your mistakes. Something everyone can relate to.
