1930's- Princess coat

  • Princess coats in the late '30s consisted of a high button up front with a wide belt
  • While having a large fold out collar along with a puff shoulder sleeve made with padding. Which is meant to demonstrate an illusion of a much broader shoulder in a square or rounded soft look and feel to it.
  • If you look towards the right youll see a model wearing an A-line skirt which is usually called "swing style"
  • Swing style(definition): " A flowy dress that still has an A-line shape.......It often will hug your chest and then the fabric will bell out from there."

1950's- Princess coats

Words that perfectly describe the 50's style:

  • Glamour
  • slim fit
  • drapey fits
  • longer hems
  • dramatic details

- Princess coats have princess seams that run vertically over the bust which is part of the reason of how the coat style got its name from.

- In the 50's the coats went from casual and classic to something more extravagant. For example the skirt was wider with added pleats aswell as bigger collars made with fun colors and patterns

1970's- Princess coats

  • There are multiple varaitions that are all fashionable and comfortable
  • Princess coats were becoming more unique along with alot of attention to detail in where finishings were added to the coats such as furry cuffs or fur starting from the collar towards the end of the hem.
  • Another popular style at the time would be the "Russian princess coat". This style is more of a A-line in cut and are usually double breasted kinda similar to a pea coat .

1990's- Princess coat

  • Fashion in the 90's started to become more minimalist. The way coats were being sewn were advancing more each year but people were more so often looking for something more sudle around that time
  • Alot of the styles at that time were slim fit throughtout the waist and would lead to a fuller bottom with cuff finishings and liner on the exterior.

2000's-Princess coat

  • From what ive noticed throught my research is that princess coats were in their prime years between 1930's throughout the 1970's it was still worn throughout the 90's but it did'nt really stick with that generation
  • Princess coats now come in short, midi and long versions
  • there are still multiple variations being produced but dont reallt have added fullness or extravagant collars like in the past.
