Confucian System

The class system

The Han dynasty had a great social change period. Things that gave Han dynasty this title was that people in the Han dynasty were split up into four groups. The groups were divided into first, second, third, and fourth class. The system that did this was called the Confuncian system. These classes effected the people of the Han dynasty's lives in many ways and basically decided what they would do for a living. But the Confucian system repersented people's social rank not their wealth or power. These classes effected the people who live in the Han dynasty's lives and helped the Han dynasty run smoothly.

Scholars

1st class

The upper class, or first class was made up of the emperor, the court, and scholars who held government positions. The majority of the first class was wealthy. They lived luxuriously and had expensive decorations, pottery and many other things. The people in this class lived in the capital and were well respected. Even royal families and other nobles were also pretty powerful.

The court

Second Class

2nd class

The second class was the biggest class. It's made up of peasants. There was 60 million people in China and 90% of them were peasants. Peasants had hard jobs and had to work hard to do them.(They mostly farmed). Peasants lived simple lives. They wore plain clothing , ate cooked grains, and lived in small villages.

Third Class

3rd class

The third class was made up of artisans. Artisans produced items for daily life and some luxury goods. They lived all over the empire. These people and below are around the lower level in the Confuncian system. Some of them had a responsibility oversee mantence of roads and canals. Some of them also had to make sure there was enogh grain.

Fourth Class

The fourth class was made up of merchants. Merchants were at the bottom of the social class because they didn't produce anything, they just bought and sold things other people made. Although, some merchants became wealthy by trade. Along with the third class the fourth class had to oversee that things were being well kept care of and they lived all over the city.

4th class

The military

The military was not considered a social class in the confuncian system. People in the militray could rise in social status because it was apart of the government.
