Who is whina Cooper

Dame Whina Cooper is a leader who worked for many years for the rights of her people. And mostly to improve the lot of Maori women. Dame Whina cooper was born in Te karaka on the 9th of December 1895. Her birth name was Hohepine in english it ment Joseohine. She sadly passed away on March 26th 1994. When she was 98 years old.

Whina was known as the Mother of the nation due to her fight for Maori civil resourse and land rights for her people she left a legacy of fighting for Maori peoples right to be recongised as people in NZ and to have rights for their traditionally owned land and resourses.

Dame Whina Cooper is the first child of her father's second marriage. Her father was Heremia Te Wake and her mother was Kare Pauro Kawatihi

Heremia Te Wake was a leader of Ngati Manawa and Te Kaitutae hapu of Te Rarawa and the son of an American whaler.Whina there was prudly influenced by her fathers roles which was as a community leader and catechist for the catholic church. Cooper had four half brothers and three half sisters from her dad's first marriage.

In 1981 Whina Cooper during the New Years Honours, Dame Whina Cooper was farther promoted to Dame commander of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the Maori people.

In 1990 Dame whina Cooper received the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal.

1991

During 1991 during the Queen's birthday honours, Dame whina Cooper became the twentieth appointee to the Order of New Zealand Which is New Zealand's highest civil honour.

1993

In 1993 Dame Whina Cooper got awarded the New Zealand sufferage Centennial Medal.
