Storytelling and Identity: Critical Perspectoves on Asian American Identity Formation

Restorative Circles

  • immerse yourself culturally in community / events
  • learn history not in curriclum
  • tell your counterstory --> externalize oppression
  • Asians seen as "valuable outsider"
  • provided exploration questions

How to Pracitce It

  • One question at a time to be fully present
  • Intentionally sit four in circle
  • Have a talking piece
  • Open with a question that's "easy"
  • Share difficult experience
  • Literally break bread after connecting
  • What did it feel like to share your stories in a circle
  • Address harm when done and strengthens community

Interesting Points

  • "Here’s what you did and how it impacted me."
  • If the relationship means something you will want to change it.
  • We spend 80% of time unpacking and reliving trauma
  • We reinforce colonialism if we only concentrate on United State justce

CCI

Day 1

Mothers in Student Affairs Administration

  • Being a #SAPro Woman = CONSITENTLY JUDGED on OUR LOOKS
  • Told how they look, comments on: hair, dress, height, weight - ALL THE TIME
  • Deliberately try to look more masculine, or baggy clothes, boxy , everything assumed attention is divided and assumed family comes first

• Research Showed Being a Mother #SaPro Means Feeling...

  • Guilty about too busy
  • Self consciousness about identity
  • That people never think you're enough
  • The need to hide family
  • That your compassion, empathy, and patience is seen as weak

• Lessons

  • Other folks need to be aware of what it's like being a mother and #SAPro
  • #SAPro mothers must challenge these notions of weakness or not enough
  • Research also showed mothers feel fulfilled and role-modeling for their children
  • Technology had made it easier to work from home if leaving early for children

• Sign up for supplemental disability BEFORE pregnant

No More Deaths Summer Trip

No More Deaths Summer Trip

Had an incredible conversation with my colleague Brenda Ivelisse, Region VI Representative and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at Kapiolani Community College about her experience bringing students to No More Deaths.

I would like to bring a student group if possible!

No More Deaths:

No More Deaths is a humanitarian organization stepping up efforts to stop the deaths of migrants in the desert and to achieving the enactment of Immigration Reform.

Biggest Memory:

Cultural Connections

Memories

Connecting our lived cultural experiences from our poem to the Japanese American National Museum Experience and

Uyghur dinner experience is something that will stay with me forever.
