Le Fantom de L'Opera or The Phantom of the Opera was written by Gaston Leroux in a time period of 1908 as a serial in a French newspaper 'Le Gaulois' and later as a book in 1910. Leroux was a journalist, author, and music critic. His book follows a similar plot to the story we know today. The story takes place in the opera house the Palais Garnier. Our main character, Christine Daeé, is a young startup opera singer who lost her father (Gustave Daaé) at a young age. Before he passed, he promisesd her an 'angel of music' who will watch over and guide her. This stays with her long after her father's death. Christine's singing attracts and old friend of her's named Raoul, a wealthy investor in the theater. The Phantom introduces himself and kidnaps her, set on turning her into his bride, however Raoul wins Christine over.
All three adaptions of Phantom of the Opera each in their own unique ways tell the same tale of compassion and how love conqures all, although some variations have the phantom suffer a more grusome fate, the plot never stops proving having compassion is important. Some characters are removed due to time constantes or to simplfy the plot like the 2004 version did, although not as book acurate, the film managed to create a massive fandom active even today. The 1925 film being an insperation for many other horror movies, Lon Chaney going on in his career to be in other horror films using his talents. Film Analysis.
One of the many takes on the Phantom (Musical)
The phantom takes notice of the relationship and vows revenge, later which he appers again and highjinks insue. In the end the phantom kidnaps Christine during a preformance. Raoul, going after them and gets caught in the Phantom's trap. The Phantom tells Christine she must make a choice between staying with him for eternity or sending her lover to his grave. Even with all the Phantom had done to her, Christine show's empathy and sympathy for the Phantom who was dealt a wrong hand in life. She shows him compassion, something that no one had ever done before. The Phantom lets them go, and is never seen again. (Unless you count the terrible sequel to the musical)
The 2004 Phantom of the Opera, even though a great adaption also had many flaws. The Phantom of the Opera musical being the main source of insperation, wasn't very true to the book. The film's singing did not capture the same feelings as in the musical; a less musical-y cast traded for a well-known cast instead. Geral Butler only given a short time to learn to sing as he wasn't musically trained; Emmy Rossum having experince helped along with the ensemble and other minor characters. Lots of fans see this film as a hit or miss, but overall paved the way for many other musical films and achived much more setting coverage and freedom to get creative, the film using, "olor to represent the vibrant events surrounding the Phantom as opposed to the black-and-white future of the characters left after these events. This change of palette creates more mystery and anticipation for the dramatic antics of the Phantom in the extended flashback.” (Retrospective: The Phantom of the Opera is ‘Shamelessly Over The Top.’ December 16th 2020)

Film Analysis
Phantom's Death
The 1925 Phantom of the Opera is first film adaptation of the celebrated book. The film is silent, relying more on expression and emotion to convey the characters thoughts and motives. The film consists of famous starts, for example Lon Chaney, the man of 'A Thousand Faces,' who did his own makeup for the iconic role of the Phantom. The story remains mostly the same, and is the most book acurate.
The 1910 book had many unique story telling features along with many flaws, one being the characters. A quote about the Phantom's character states his personality and character flaws best, "Stressing the “reality” of the story might be a way of getting around the fact that Erik is a little too good at everything to be believable. The only thing he isn’t is handsome, which of course guides the entire story." (Charlie Brooks, May 1st 2018). The book is very well written, Gaston Leroux makes it a point to make this story seem realistic, even with fake documents to support the story which gives it an overall realistic feel. The book has many characters, descriptive settings and a beautiful message of love conquers all.
Phantom of the Opera had at this time been made into many diffrent film re-creations, this film however, changed the game due to it's musical re-imagining. The Phantom, Christine and Raoul singing, conveying complex emotions and moving the plot forward, as By the Book puts it, "Just as Leroux used music throughout the novel as a device for foreshadowing, Lloyd Webber created music that further adds depth into the story.” (By the Book, 8:26-8:32).
The Film with a stellar cast of Gerald Butler, Emmy Rossum and more. The film headed by Andrew Webber, the creator of the iconic and most well known musical production.
The 1925 Phantom of the Oprea was unique to it's time, from the set being built, to the cast and, the finally the story itself being adapted. In it's first watch the audince fainted at the sight of the Phantom, being they'd never seen anything like it before. Some of the characters such as the Perisian and Count Philippe de Chagny (Raoul's brother) are more prominant in the book and here; they'd later be erased or cease to exist at all in the musical and other movies. Christine and Raoul remain similar, Phantom's backstory is added on to with him being a genius and his many tricks up his sleaves. Ultimantly the Phantom is presumingly killed by the mob and drowns; a more gruling and intense ending to the villain.
