what is water scarcity?

The absence of water or inadequate safe water in any geographic area for humans and environmental use.

Nature of water scarcity

Nature of water scarcity

Algeria has 95% arid land and 80% desert. Water is naturally source here because it has minimal seasonal rainfall. Algeria's coastal and northern mountains have a Mediterranean climate with rainy winters, and warm summers. The Sahara's temperatures range from –10° to 34° C or to 49° C.

Factors contributing to water scarcity

factors contributing to water scarcity

The issues of water scarcity don't come drought but from the mass migration of rural Algerians to the cities. 60% of Algerians live in urban areas. As a result Algerian cities, like Oran and its capital, Algiers, are experiencing huge structural water shortages. Pollution and population are the primary cause for water scarcity in Algeria.

How does water scarcity impact people?

How does water scarcity impact people?

What is the world health organization minimum requirement of water use per person per day?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between 50 and 100 liters of water per person per day are needed to ensure that most basic needs are met and few health concerns arise.

How does your countries water usage compare to Australia’s water usage?

Algeria's per capita water availability is less than 300 cubic meters per year, and Australia uses 100,000L per capita per year.

Impacts of water scarcity in Algeria

Water scarcity impacts

Social impacts of water scarcity

social

The social impacts of water scarcity is that it affects families and their communities. Without clean, easily accessible water, they can become locked in poverty for generations. Children drop out of school and parents struggle to make a living.

Environmental impacts of water scarcity

Environmental

The resulting water overuse that is related to water scarcity, often located in areas of irrigation agriculture, harms the environment in several ways including increased salinity, nutrient pollution, and the loss of floodplains and wetlands.

Economic impacts of water scarcity

economic

Economic impacts of scarcity can lead to food shortages while raising commodity prices thereby hindering trade with developing economies and in the long run cause civil unrest.

What management strategies are being implemented to manage issues that have been identified

Water management

To manage water pollution the Algeria government has put up several laws. The first of these laws was made in 1983 for the protection of the environment. Fines and other penalties are put on polluters. Management strategies for overpopulation is more improved water structures and water plants .

Actions to stop water scarcity

What actions can be taken in response to water scarcity?

- Education and what is happening

- New Conservation Technologies.

- Recycle mostly all water.

- Improve Irrigation and Agriculture Water Use.

- Water Pricing.

- Energy Efficient water Plants.

- Rain Water Harvesting.

- Community Governance and Partnerships.

Non - government

Actions the government, non government organisations and community are doing.

Suze

There objectives are

- re-establish a 24-hour high quality water distribution service

-ramp up the management and operation of sewerage systems

-upgrade and sustainable manage water and sewerage infrastructures and facilities.

The Algerian government has invested for new dams for better rain catchment capabilities. The Algerian government has also developed a new source of water which is desalination technology. Desalination technology is a unlimited water source.

Government

To help with water scarcity the combination of reverse osmosis technology and improved water infrastructure.

Also the Magtaa Desalination Plant which has helped with fresh water provides drinking water to 5 million people

How Algeria has provided more fresh water

What are some possible solutions that the government of Algeria can implement?

Some of the possible solutions that the government of Algeria can implement are more desalination technology and water infrastructure. The government can also help recycle water and have less water waste.

Solutions to water scarcity in Algeria

costs

What are the costs involved in managing the issue?

To build a desalination plant it costs $80 million dollars to build and a large plant. To run a desalination plant it costs $68.6 million more per year to operate a desalination plant.

water infrastructure

water infrastructure

It depends how much water you want for water infrastructure ranging from the amount of pipes you want.

water recycling

water recycling costs

To build a water recyling station it costs aboout $1.5 million dollars to start it up and have everything built and done.

Small scale alternatives

Can you think of any alternatives to the water scarcity problem that can be implemented on a smaller scale?

Not really only, to use less waste water from your home to water your garden, make sure there is no water leaks, reduce a lot of water usage and to store water in a water tank.

How individuals and communities help mange the issue

How can communities and individuals manage the issue?

- Use less waste water from your home to water your garden

- Make sure there is no water leaks

- Reduce a lot of water usage

- Store water in a water tank
