  • French revolution started after the storming at Bastille in 1789

  • After the Bastille attack, Peasants formed their National Assembly for the rights of common men, new and improve government and for the freedom of increase against 1st and 2nd estate

  • Toughest period of France during revolution was reign of terror, which resulted massive killing, conflict and led by Robespierre

  • After this, Napoleon took control of France

  • Napoleon was born in Corsica (a French territory) in August 1769.

  • His family belonged to the high social class

  • He was sent to military academy in France

  • Napoleon graduated in 1785, at the age of 16, and joined the military as a second lieutenant.

  • During the French Revolution he served the Revolutionary Army.

  • The young general soon received command of a French army for an invasion of Italy.

  • He won several brilliant victories over the Austrians who ruled there

  • In 1798, Napoleon invaded Egypt but the British fleet destroyed the French fleet in the battle of the Nile.

  • Soon backed to Paris and took charge of French Revolution

  • In Paris, Napoleon found that many people were dissatisfied with the Directory. he used his popularity and proclaimed himself “First Consul” 1799.

  • In 1802, he made himself sole “Consul for Life.”

  • Two years later he proclaimed himself

“Emperor.” in 1804

  • By 1804, Napoleon had gained almost

absolute power. He knew the French

would never stand for a return to the Old

Regime. Therefore, he continued many

reforms of the revolution.

  • But at the same time, he kept firm

personal control of the government.

WHAT WERE HIS ACHIEVEMENT FOR FRANCE?

  • Napoleon enforced a law requiring all citizens to pay taxes. He also created the national Bank of France

  • Napoleon’s greatest achievement in government was the Napoleonic Code, which influenced French law to the present. (right of freedom) in 1804

  • He introduced religious toleration, abolished Feudalism, made the Napoleonic Code into law and reduced the power of the Catholic Church.

  • From 1807 to 1812, Napoleon was at the height of his power. He controlled an empire that stretched from France to the borders of Russia and Austria
