Theatre has been around for millennium and has existed in many cultures in many different forms. From the Greeks and Romans, to the modern era, and everything in between. Theatre has gone through many changes and evolutions through the past thousands of years,

Musical Theatre

The most influential contribution to the modern era is musical theatre. During the 20th century, musicals and Broadway became much more prevalent. Broadway theater started declining before world war 2, and reached a low point in the season of 1949-1950, but started slowly increasing afterwards.

Andrew Lloyd Webber

Andrew Lloyd Webber is known for being composer for some of the worlds most famous musicals during the modern era, such as Cats, and The Phanton of The Opera which is the most performed and longest running musical in broadway history. In 2010, Andrew Lloyd Webber's foundation was rewarded 19 million euros to the projects that focused on the enhancements of arts education and participation.

The Golden Age of Broadway

In 1943, Rodgers and Hammerstein released Oklahoma! the musical, which marked the start of Broadway's golden age. The golden age is is known as the period in which theatre grew the most. The golden age of broadway is when broadway started growing and developing into what it is today.

Technical Theatre

During the modern time period, staging changed and developed overtime with the help of industrial technological revolution, democratic revolution, and an intellectual revolution that would disrupt earlier conception of time. The modern stage incorporates many pieces of technology such as lighting, microphones, sound systems etc. The reason for technological advancements to be involved in theatre is for a better experience for the people spectating.

Rodgers and Hammerstein

Rodgers & Hammerstein

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein were responsible for introducing elements of music, drama and dance into theatre. They also produced many famous works, some of which include The King and I, The Sound of Music, Carousel, and Cinderella.
