Rizal's Travel Timeline in Europe

Background & Introduction

Rizal’s primary goal in leaving for Europe in 1882 was to complete his education. He also has a personal reason and that is he wanted to become an eye specialist in order to cure her mother from an eye ailment.

Little did his countrymen know that he had another mission, one that would lead to him to inspire fellow revolutionaries through his writing.

Rizal's secret mission was to observe the lives, cultures, laws, and governments of the countries in Europe, in preparation for liberating the Philippines from Spain's tyrannical rule.

May 3, 1882

  • Rizal left the Philippines for the first time and boarded the Salvadora, a mail steamer ship which was headed to Singapore, using a passport with the name Jose Mercado, which was procured to him by his uncle, Antonio Rivera, father of Leonor Rivera.

  • The Salvadora docked at Singapore.
  • Rizal registered at the Hotel de la Paz and spent two days on a sightseeing soiree of the city.

  • The steamer docked at the French Harbor of Marseilles.

  • Rizal went to Marseilles in order to ride the train going to Barcelona
  • He stayed in Marseilles for a two-and-a-half day visit.

  • Rizal left Merseilles by train for the last lap of his trip to Spain via Portbou.

  • After he read the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, he had an inspiration to write his own novel with the same topic–to expose Spanish colonial abuse in print. This idea became the embryo of his first novel Noli Me Tangere.

  • Rizal explained the term "Filibusterismo" in the newspaper of Madrid El Progreso, calling the attention of the Spanish authorities.

  • Rizal joined the Masonic lodge called Acacia in Madrid.

  • Rizal went back to Paris, this time as an opthalmology trainee. He practiced opthalmology under Dr. Louis de Wecker - a French ophthalmologist at Crugen Clinic. He worked as an assistant from November 1885 to February 1886.

  • Met Maximo Viola, a wealthy medical student hailing from San Miguel, Bulacan.

  • Rizal wrote a fine poem “A Las Flores de Heidelberg” (To the Flowers of Heidelberg).

  • Rizal arrived in Heidelberg, a historic city in Germany famous for its old university and romantic surroundings.

  • He learned the German Language in this city.
  • Attended lectures of Dr. Otto Becker and Prof. Wilhelm Kuehne at University of Heidelberg.
  • Rizal also worked for Dr. Becker at the University Eye Hospital.
  • He completed his eye specialization in this city.

  • Rizal went to Wilhelmsfeld to board with Lutheran pastor Dr. Karl Ullmer and his family. He studied the German language and life in Wilhelmsfeld.

  • Rizal spent his 25th birthday with Dr. Ullmer.
  • Dr. Ullmer's house was where Rizal wrote the last chapters of his novel Noli Me Tángere.

  • After six months in Heidelberg, Rizal traveled by train to Berlin through Leipzig, Frankfurt, Bonn and Dresden, arriving in the city on the evening.
  • Rizal met Dr. Feodor Jagor for the first time.

  • The bleak winter of 1886 in Berlin was Rizal’s darkest winter because no money arrived from Calamba and he was flat broke.

  • Rizal met Dr. Wilkom, a professor of History at the University of Prague, and his daughter.

  • According to Viola, “nothing of importance happened” in this city.

  • Rizal and Viola arrived in the beautiful city of Vienna, capital of Austria-Hungary
  • Got interviewed by a local newspaper.

Norfentals - one of the greatest Austrian novelists was favorably impressed by Rizal, and years later he spoke highly of Rizal, “whose genius he so much admired.”

  • Rizal treated Viola to a blow-out for his birthday celebration.
  • Rizal and Viola spent fifteen delightful days in Geneva.

  • Viola and Rizal parted ways. Rizal to Rome; while Viola went to Barcelona.
  • Rizal enjoyed the stay except when he learned that the Igorots were ridiculed in an exhibit in Madrid.

  • The steamer left Saigon for Manila.

Near midnight of August 5, 1887, the Haiphong arrived in Manila.
