aS AN INTERVIEWER YOUR JOB IS TO USE LISTENING SKILLS AND INTERVIEWING TECHNIQUES TO MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED.
Before you can interview someone, you need to do some basic planning. The first step is to find an expert.
- Ask teachers, parents and neighbors for suggestions.
- Consider people you know who work in fields connected to your subject area.
- Conduct a keyword search on the Web.
List two or three experts you would like to interview. Then conduct background research to be sure these people have the kind of knowledge you are looking for.
SETTING UP AN INTERVIEW
Telephone, text, or e-mail the person you wanto to interview and cover these points:
- Identify who you are and why you want to interview the person.
- Arrange a time, data, and place that would be convenient for both of you to meet.
- Ask permission to audiotape or videotape the interview.
- State where you can be contacted in case the person need to change plans.
PREPARING FOR THE INTERVIEW
Do some more background research on the person you'll be interviewing to help you write questions. Then decide what you want to know first from this person, and write questions that will get this information.
These questions allow just a simple YES or NO. When using them, ask an open question after it.

Conducting an interview
- Ask questions clearly, listen carefully, and DON'T interrupt.
- Give the person time to answer.
- Help the person stay on topic.
- Ask follow-up questions if something is confusing or if you need more information.
- Take notes, even if you are recording the interview.
- Thank the person at the end of the interview and ask if you may call him or her to check facts or get additional information.
Task
Consider everything seen in this presentation.
- Choose one person you want to interview.
- Write down 10 questions you want to ask. If you write a yes-or-no question, it MUST be followed by an open-ended question.
- Questions must be coherent and grammatically correct.
- The questions must be shared in a Docs document.
