Introduction

F

Remember those stories you were told as a child; the story books, other people's stories and even now, how you learn from reading stories on online and on social media?

Our brain is hardwired to learn from stories and it is second nature to us. Let's therefore look at how Learning & Development specialists can use story telling in adult learning to engage learners and help them in their learning.

E

Why story-based learning works well in adult learning.

1. It is micro-learning that is short, interactive, engaging, and memorable.

2. It is personalized - learners can relate to the story and see its application.

3. It is flexible - stories can be adjusted to learner characteristics and settings.

4. Creativity is limitless - stories can be presented in a myriad of technical, simple, and creative ways to suit facilitators and learners.

The story telling process

1. Simplify complex ideas into a beginning (a background), a middle (a challange), and an ending (a suggested solution to a problem at work)

2. Sensitize the learners

3. Drive attitudinal change

4. Drive decision making change

5. Drive behavioural change

6. Check if action has taken place.

E

The story-telling in adult learning goals:

Introduce the learner to a new idea

Encourage them to apply this idea to their current assumptions

Ask them how their assumptions have changed with the new learning.

Ask them to verbalize how they will apply this new learning.
