I am happily married and have two children. My 15-year-old son Collin has a very rare chromosomal disorder called TANGO2, which causes developmental delays, cognitive impairments, and health and physical problems. My 11-year-old daughter Lucy started middle school this year and keeps us all busy with her tween-age activities. I love reading, enjoy gardening when I have the time, and relish every summer memory I can make at my family's lake cottage in Michigan.
Ethics means doing what is legally and morally right. As educators, it is imperative that we lead ethically. This means we "do right" by the students entrusted to us. We teach them what they need to learn to be productive citizens and good people. We don't let our personal feelings and opinions get in the way of doing what needs to be done for our students. We teach all students inclusively and equitably and create environments in our schools and classrooms that support all learners. We stand up to injustices against our students and work to provide a free and appropriate education for all.
Ethical leadership means that those in charge create a positive, equitable environment for all that is rooted in trust and respect. Ethical leaders do not play favorites but treat all fairly and equitably. Ethical leaders also make sure that all voices are heard, especially voices of the marginalized. Ethical leaders are fair in decision making and take into account how their decisions affect others. Ethical leaders view their leadership as a service, rather than a stepping stone.
