Snapping Hip Syndrome

Define

Also known as Dancer's hip or coxa saltans, snapping hip syndrome is a palpable or audible "snapping" within the hip as it flexes and extends. This injury is classified as insidious or chronic onset.

Anatomy

Causes and Prevention

Causes and Symptoms

Causes

Snapping hip syndrome can be from muscle tightness, muscle weakness, improper dance technique, and inflammation of the muscles.

Starkey, 2015

Symptoms

Characteristics

  • Pain and discomfort with the snapping on the lateral or anteriomedial aspects of the hip
  • Pain with hip flexion and extenion
  • Annoying popping and clicking

(Starkey, 2015) (Contributers, Physiopedia)

Internal Cause

Internal Cause

Ilipsoas passes over the femoral head, iliopectineal ridge, iliospoas bursa, or bony growth on the lesser trochanter as the hip moves from flexion to extension.

(Starkey, 2015) (Contributers, Physiopedia)

External Cause

External Cause

  • The IT band sliding over the greater trochanter when the hip flexes.
  • Can be caused by predisposing condtions such as a bursa on the greater trochanter, IT band inflammation, or reduced femoral neck angle.

(Starkey, 2015) (Contributers, Physiopedia)

Prevention

Prevention

  • Stretch hip flexors
  • Core and hip strengtheing
  • Avoid sitting for long periods of time (shortens flexors and irritates iliopsoas tendon)

  • Eat more anti-inflammatories (olive oil, avocados, fish oil, fish, nuts, etc.)
  • Eat protein (eggs, meat, legumes)
  • Balance fat

Facts

Interesting Facts

Facts

  • Snapping hip syndrome occurs in women more than men
  • Women in their lower twenties are more at risk for snapping hip syndrome
  • Hip problems make up 10% of dance injuries and snapping hip syndrome makes up half of those
