Which gender has the higher population in the youngest age groups on your pyramid? Can you account for this?

Males have a slightly higher population in the youngest age groups. There is nearly the same amount of males and females in the youngest age groups of 1-14 meaning female children are just as valued as male children.

Which gender has the higher population in the oldest age group? Can you account for this?

Females have the higher population in the 100+ age group. There is no males in the 100+. This shows that men in New Zealand live a lifestyle which causes them to die earlier then women.

What can you tell about your country's growth rate by looking at your graph?

According to New Zealand’s growth rate graph from 1990-2020 the graph shows that the growth rate is very inconsistent and is constantly dropping and rising. The country was at its highest growth rate in 2017 and continues to drop from there. Currently in 2022 the average growth rate is 1.2%.

What are some factors that could change the shape of your pyramid?

There are many things that could change the shape of this pyramid. If medicine wasn’t as advanced as it is right now then sickness would affect the pyramid greatly especially for women as far as maternal care, so the population for females would be greatly affected. The shape could also be changed in size if we didn’t have the medicine we do because the life expectancy would be a lot shorter. The pyramid could also change in the future when medicine and other things get even more advanced and people begin to live even longer. The pyramid could be affected if we ran out of resources we need and the Earth could no longer support that many people. If there were labor laws/child limits or a war that would also greatly affect the shape of the pyramid.

Determine the approximate percentage of the population that has yet to reach childbearing age (consider this 0-14). What do these numbers say about the prospects for future growth?

About 20% of the population has yet to reach childbearing age. This is equal to out of the total population of New Zealand in 2020 which was 4,925,132. These numbers say that a 1/4 of the population is this youth group. The population is up to a 100+ so if the youth takes up that much of the population there will most likely be an increase in the growth rate once that group grows into the childbearing age.

If you had a business and you wanted to capitalize on your information about the population age distribution, what would you sell?

I would probably sell or rent cars. According to the last census, 92.1% of households in New Zealand have at least one vehicle, this is one of the highest vehicle to household ratio for a country in the world. The area with the highest population bulge is the 20-35 year olds. These are early adults who are starting their lives out and will be needing to purchase a car.

What percentage of the population is above age 65?

15% of the population is over 65. The total population is 4,925,132 and the population above age 65 is 758,991.

Does the information from the population pyramid support your earlier conclusion about whether this country would be considered developed or developing? Explain how or how not.

Yes the population pyramid supports the fact that New Zealand is a developed country because the life expectancy is high which means they have a high population and good health care because without good health care they wouldn’t be able to survive as long and the life expectancy would be very short. The pyramid also shows that male and females stay relatively close in population compared to one another meaning they are both valued and also proves that there is good health care because if there wasn’t then there would be a lot less females because of the lack of maternal care. The life expectancy for both genders is 82.5 years of age.The growth rate is also not too high or too low and the death rate is also not too high.
