"We eased in beside Miss Maudie, who looked around. 'Where were you all, didn't you hear the commotion?' 'What happened?' asked jem. 'Mr. Radley shot at a Negro in his collard patch.' 'Oh. Did he hit him?' 'No' said Miss Stephanie. "Shot in the air. Scared him pale, though. Says if anybody sees a white nigger around, that's the one'" (Lee 72).

What happened

In this quote Jem, Scout, and Dill had just went to the Radley's house trying to see what Boo looks like. That's when Mr. Radley started to shoot the air. Causing Jem, Scout, and Dill to run for it leading them to have the conversation with Miss. Stephanie.

What's going on

Why

This is the most important quote because it explains the violence that is occurring in this scene. Jem was on the edge of dying because Mr. Radley attempted to shoot him because him. Dill, and Scouts where snooping around in his backyard trying to get a peek at what Boo Radley looks like and what he does just sitting around in the house all day.
