History and Overview

Land Grant Universities

Institutions designated by state legislation to receive funds and other benefits outlined in the Morrill Acts.

Land Grant Universities

Morrill Acts

Create institutions that taught agriculture, military tactics, mechanical arts, and classical studies.

Morrill Acts were signed into effect in 1862, 1890, and 1994.

Morril Acts

Hatch Act

Passed in 1887, deeming agricultural expirement stations a requirement of land grant universities.

Smith-Lever Act

Passed in 1914, with the intent to create Cooperative Extension Service through each land grant university. Extension Services original intent was to share information and resources learned via the research conducted at experiment stations.

CSU Extension Then

  • 1870 - Colorado Agricultural College was created
  • 1879 - First Farmer's Institue was held, the precursor to agricultural extension
  • 1887 - Agricultural Expirement Stations were created
  • 1910s - Extension Youth Development begins
  • 1914 - Cooperative Extension Service created
  • First Extension office in Colorado was in Logan County
  • 1970s - Master Gardener program began
  • 1990s - Drought Task Force formed

CSU Extension Now

  • Early 2000s - CSU Extension had 54 offices across Colorado
  • Agents branched into climate-smart agriculture and energy conservation work
  • Urban agriculture is a hot topic focusing on food policy and process
  • Today - Extension is housed in 63 counties in Colorado.
  • Empowers Coloradoans to adress community needs with resources provided through Extension
