The 1920's to Today

Roles of women in society

Nowadays women work in a huge variety of jobs, from engineering to politics. They are now more conscient about their lack of freedom, which was covered with false messages that told them they were free.

In the 1920's: women with college degrees worked as nurses, teachers, librarians, and social workers. Women were also finding new opportunities in politics. In 1928 there were 145 women serving in state legislatures. There also were some women called "flappers" who challenged how they were supposed to behave.

Alcohol usage and legality

In the 1920's: The Eighteenth Amendment outlawed the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. There had been lots of inconvenients such as organized criminals that became rich trading illegal alcohol, so in 1933, with the Twenty-first Amendment, the prohibition ended.

Nowadays: The alcohol is legal if you are older than 21 years, but its consume is much more controlled

Immigration to the United States

Nowadays: United States citizens still don't know so clear what Donald Trump is going to do with immigrants. They are more accepted by the society, but the president, a racist and xenophobic man, doesn't want immigrants in his country.

In the 1920's: Many recent immigrants were poor and didn't speak English. Americans often saw them as a threat to their jobs and culture. The Emergency Quota Act of 1921 limited the total number of immigrants allowed into the country and The National Origins Act of 1924 banned immigration from East Asia entirely.

Music

Nowadays: the music industry in the United States is similar to the European, all the music has become monotonous, apart from some exceptions. The most widespread genre is pop.

In the 1920's: they were known as the Roaring Twenties until jazz music became very popular, so its name became the Jazz Age. It was developed in New Orleans, where Afican Americans, Europeans and West Africans mixed their cultures

Movies

In the 1920's: they became a major national passion. They had no sound until the first words in a movie were said in 1927. It was a big bussiness, and the actors and actresses had a lots of influence on people.

Nowadays: Movies are in our everyday lives, when we turn on the television, the Goyas, the cinemas...
