1915: Carter G. Woodson

1915

Helped in the founding of the Association for the study of Negro (now Afro-American) Life and History. He also initiated Black History month. (Web Solutions LLC) In the next two decades, he publishes textbooks and literature that are the foundation of African-American education

Brown vs BOE: ruled segregation unconstitutional

Women's rights movement joined forces with the multicultural education movement in hopes of equality for ALL WOMEN (EdChange)

1977: NCATE

NCATE began enforcing standards that implemented multicultural education, programs, etc. (Web Solutions LLC)

A Nation At Risk: The imperative for educational reform- discussed the failures of the schooling system, specifically “at risk” students and the faults that lied within local, all the way to federal efforts. Emphasizes the need for change and focusing on at risk students.

Restructuring education systems due to failed reforms. Teachers were held more accountable through tests of their multicultural competency

Rewarding successful schools that demonstrate their competence and assisting schools that were lower (improve teacher motivation) became more popular

No Child Left Behind enacted: increased accountability for schools as well as teachers. Emphasized importance of bringing ELLs or struggling students to a proficient level by means of testing.

Every Student Succeeds Act: replaced NCLB, updated a lot of the information to give schools specific goals and numbers to reach

World Health Organization (WHO) declares a pandemic which results in all schools being shut down and a damper put on all students academic progress

Many states, including Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, have already banned teaching Critical Race Theory. The states that have bills being reviewed to prohibit critical race theory include: Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Goals

  • Equiping teachers with the ability to integrate cultural content.
  • Inform students on the extent in which cultural bias may effect their material and how to idenitfy what is accurate.
  • To reduce prejudice! By facilitating a classroom that embraces diversity, prejudice will likely dissipate.
  • To enforce teaching strategies that appeal to the entire class rather than a specific population.
  • Basic empowerment of the student body and cultural diversty

  • Differentiating opinions on what cultures are diverse and deserve special attention
  • In order to have sufficient materials to teach in a culturally responsive manner requires more funding, and many schools do not have enough money
  • Everbody (educators, administration, etc.) has to have an understanding of multicultural education
