How pigs nourish their young

Female pigs gestation period is 115 days. They also produce about 2 litters per year and there are about 10 piglets per litter.

Female swine nourish their young by giving the piglets milk from their mammary glands which lasts for about 25 days.

Weaning a piglet takes about 3 to 4 weeks on average.

How long does it take a swine to fully mature?

Once weaned, piglets are placed in a nursery until they are about 8-10 weeks of age, The last stage known as grow-finish when pigs are fed until they reach market weight. Pigs are normally sold for meat at five to six months of age.

Life Stages

Life Stages

At about 5 weeks old the pig is about 10 kg (22 lbs), after the pig grows a bit and matures at around 9-10 weeks the pig has already gained 20 kg(44 lbs) and now weighs 30 kg (66 lbs), then finally around the time the pig starts to get its finish at around 22 weeks it weighs 100+ kg(220 lbs) which is more than double the weight it was at 10 weeks.
