TIMELINE

1054, The Schism

AKA the east-west schism, the western church led by pope Leo IX split from the eastern church led by King Cerularius. The eastern church left Rome to Constantinople while the western church stayed.

Based on Roman law, followed traditional Christian values and kept the old laws.

The Eastern Church

Started to create new rules for the Church. Based on ancient Greek laws.

Some of the new laws are...

  • Priests were allowed to have wives as long as they were married before joining the priesthood
  • Priests can give the sacrament of conformation
  • Real bread is use for communion in masses

1274, The Council of Lyons

The Western Church got together and made a council and made a plea of forgiveness to the Eastern church. However it did not work because the Eastern church didn't want to conform to the western church.

Council of Ferrara

1439, The Council of Ferrara in Florence

The Eastern and Western church come together again at another attempt to end the schism, however once again it was not successful.

1518, Martin Luther's 95 Essays

1517, The Prodistant Reformation

The Western Churh started to split again, and believed that there was no truth outside of the bible.

In the middle of the day Martin Luther walked to the Wittenburg castle doors and nailed his 95 essays on. All the essays were about what he though was wrong with the church.

Indulgences

Indulgences

Withing this time the Church starts to sell indulgences, a way for people to pay to get their sins forgiven without doing the act of reconciliation. This was very popular due to the growth of the idea of purgatory. This is one thing that Martin Luther had a problem with.
