Introduction
The project focuses on overcoming the widely held perception of ELT in Sri Lanka being a failure especially in underprivileged schools. There are many reasons for this such as the lack of skilled English teachers as well as the unequal allocation of resources.
Understanding the importance of learning and teaching English as being the passport to opportunity and also an essential requirement for almost every profession, through this project we will be focusing on teaching English as a secondary or tertiary language to a selected underprivileged school in Sri Lanka.
Introduction to the
school
Name: Giragama Prathamika Vidyala (Previously known as Giragama Kanishta Vidyalaya)
Situated: In village of Giragama in Pimilathalawa,
- Teaches students from grades 1-5.
- There are currently 110 students studying in the school taught by 6 teachers.
- This was once a school that taught students from grades 1 to 11, but unfortunately was reduced to only teach up to grade 5 due to the poor number of students in the school.
- There is one class for each grade and a maximum of one teacher for each subject taught including one English teacher.
- The current teacher to student ratio is 1:18.
