*DEFINITION
*CAUSES OF STRIDOR IN CHILDREN
- STRIDOR is noisy respiration produced by the turbulent airflow through the narrowed air passages
-It may be heard trough during inspiration , expiration or both.
eg:retropharyngeal abscess
eg:vocal cord paralysis and subglottis stenosis
eg:bronchial foreign body and tracheal stenosis
Causes:

1. Laryngotracheobronchitis (croup)
- most common cause of acute stridor in children
- barking cough worse at night
2. Retropharyngeal abscess
- complication of bacterial pharyngitis
- difficulty in swallowing and hyperextension of neck
3. Epiglottitis
-medical emergency
-abrupt onset of fever and sore throat
4. Aspiration of foreign bodies
- food such as nuts , hot dogs , sausages
- history of coughing and choking
5. Laryngomalacia
-The most common cause of
inspiratory stridor in the neonatal
period and early infancy.
-accounts upto 75% cases of stridor
-born with soft cartilage
-Placing the patient in a prone position
with
the head up improves the stridor
-supinr position worsens it
