Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

By: Marsel, Michael, Silas

Introduction

The movie we have chosen is Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017).

Introduction

Synopsis

This movie is about four highschool kids who are all brought together through detention. During the detention they find an old video game console, and once they start up the game they are litterally sucked into it. Once they fall into the game they find that they have assumed the bodies of the adult avatars that they had picked at the beginning of the game. They discover that once you're in the game the only way to leave alive, is to beat the game. So in using the individual skills of their avatars, they struggle to complete the game.

Synopsis

Our Scene Selection

Our Scene Selection

The scene we have decided to "recreate" is when our four main characters drop down into the jungle for the first time in the entire movie; surrounded by trees and swampy terrain.

This image shows the starting area of these characters' adventure into the jungle. As you can tell, there is an abundant amount of overgrowth.

Our Locations' Potential

Our Locations' Potential

The potential locations we chose were as following: Manaus, Brazil; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Belem, Brazil. All of these locations have an ideal climate, and 2 of them have a high total precipitation, Hawaii does not. These locations are decently populated, but a high population density would not affect the making of this film due to our requirement for a natural setting. When it comes down to which location would work the best, we rule out the similarities between climates since they are all quite similar, and we look for which location provides the best natural setting that would resemble that of the scene we chose. When we took a look at Manaus, we discovered how close this city is to the largest rainforest in the world: The Amazon Rainforest. Although it is not a jungle, the resemblence is incredible and the accessibility is very open since they have tourism services at a cheap cost.

Manaus, Brazil

Manaus, Brazil

The city we chose was Manaus, Brazil because it is the closest major city to the Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon Rainforest is located in Brazil (as well as sharing a small percentage with other South American countries). It has a humid (not unbarable) climate that much resembles the heat we experience during an average Toronto summer. There is abundant precipitation from time to time which causes a swamp-like terrain, and great sunlight hours which is useful for filming. Most importantly, the resemblance between certain parts of the Amazon Rainforest and the jungle in Jumanji is almost indistinguishable.
