Beowulf

The Backbone

Throughout the book Beowulf has two goals at all times.

1. To protect the Danes and slay the monsters

2. To show that he is the best and can not be bested in battle.

  • Black

  • White

Black represents the thirst for violence that Beowulf has.

White represents the protecter that Beowulf is.

When in battle Beowulf holds a sword and shield in his hands.

Beowulf also holds the lives of those he is protecting.

Beowulf believes in a life of violence. He searches the world for someone or something to fight, to show that he is the best.

The Feet

Beowulf stands upon a thick layer of narcissism/ his ego which grows with each achievment

Beowulf also stands upon a belief of protecting/helping those in need.

Quotations

This quote shows that Beowulf is a very violent person and enjoys violence. A very good example of his love for violence in the quote is, " Drippiing with my enemies' blood.".

"They have seen my strength for themselves, Have watched me rise from the darkness of war, Dripping with my enemies' blood. I drove Five great giants into chains, chased All of that race from the earth. I swam In the blackness of night, hunting monsters Out of the ocean, and killing them one By one; death was my errand and the fate/ They had earned. Now Grendel and I are called Together, and I've come." Page 36

This quote shows that beowulf came not only to fight the monster Grendel but also to protect the Danes from her as well.

"I had a fixed purpose when I put to sea.

As I sat in the boat with my band of men,

I meant to perform to the uttermost

what your people wanted or perish in the attempt,

in the fiend's clutches. And I shall fulfill that purpose,

prove myself with a proud deed

or meet my death here in the mead-hall."
