After a surprising resignation of the former president Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Putin took office right before the 2000 election. Then in the 2000 election held in March, Putin was elected the president of the country by winning 53% of the vote in Russia.
Journalist Anna Politkovskaya, known for covering the events of the Second Chechen War, was shot dead on October 7, 2006, in the elevator of her own home. The murder was recognized as an assassination and the perpetrators received from 11 years to life imprisonment — but whoever gave the order was never found.
This event highlighted the growth in censorship by the Russian government, and was followed by many more similar instances
Following the 2014 Winter Olympics, Putin ordered troops to take back the peninsula of Crimea that they formally owned. After a month of fighting, Russia annexed Crimea with no military opposition.
Important because there being no fighting back against Russia, it allowed them to expand their sovereignty which can be seen today.
Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan signed an agreement to establish the Eurasian Economic Union on May 29, 2014. States committed to guaranteeing the free movement of goods, services, capital and labor within their borders. Later, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan joined the EAEU.
This grew Russia's trade relations and led to economic and political advancements in the country.
In March and April 2021, Russian president Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian military to begin massing thousands of personnel and equipment near its border with Ukraine and in Crimea, representing the largest mobilization since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
