Nuclear Disaster

Impact and Recovery

Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Disaster

The Chernobyl disaster began on 26 April 1986 with the explosion of the No. 4 reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

Introduction

Nuclear disasters have profound and far-reaching impact on our world, both in terms of immediate consequences and long term recovery efforts.

Today we are diving into one of the most sigificant nuclear catastrophes in history.

Elements at risk

The elements at risk due to the chernobyl disaster are:

1-Human Health

2-Environment

3-Agriculture and Food Supply

4-Infrastructure and Economy

Lessons to be learned

-Importance of safety culture

-design and operational flaws

-Emergency preparedness

-Radiation protection

-Long-term consequences

-Public Awareness

Recovery methods

This are some of recovery methods and actions that were performed during and after the chernobyl incident:

-Sarcophagus Construction

-Decontaminaton

-Evacuation and relocation

-Radiation monitoring and research

-Rehabilitaion and Resettlement

Vulnerabilities exposed by chenobyl disaster

1. Proximity to Population center:

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant was close to city of Pripyat, with its population of approx 49000 residants.

This closness increased the potential human impact of the disaster.

2. Inadequte Containment Structure:

The reactor lacked adequate containment structure. when the explosion occured radioactive material were released directly into environment.

3.Limited Emergency Response Preparedness
