IMPACTS

OF ACID RAIN

What is Acid Rain?

What is it?

Acid rain is a term that is used to describe any acidic precipitation such as nitric or sulfuric acid in forms of rain, snow, fog, hail and even sometimes dust.

What causes it?

When sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide are emmitted and tranferred through the atmostphere by wind currents, the chemicals react with water, oxygen and other chemicals to create sulfuric and nitric acids, which then fall to the ground in the form of acidic precipitation.

Human Health

Acid rain is not harmful to humans if they are walking in acid rain, or swimming in a lake affected by it, but it becomes a problem to human health when SO2 and NOx are in the air, because they can be very harmful to humans

Why is it harmful?

The reaction of SO2 and NOx form a sulfate in the atmosphere that gets inhaled into peoples lungs. Inhalation of these particles may cause heart attacks and lung infections, and breathing difficulties with people who have asthma.

Productivity of lakes

Productivity of lakes

Certain animals and plants are unable to tolerate acidic waters, because they are acid-sensitive, so as the pH lowers, many fish will die. If the pH is too low in the water, fish eggs cannot hatch, and frogs won't have food such as mayflies because they cannot survive due to the pH.

Nitrogen Pollution

The nitrogen in acid rain affects many parts of the ecosystem, such as declining fish in the coastal region being partially responible by the nitrogen pollution.

Forestry

forestry

Acid rain causes aluminum to be leached from the soil, which is harmful to trees. minerals tha trees nees to grow are also romoved by acid rain.

Acidic Fog

Trees' foliage are being stripped away by acid rain, which leads to the trees not being able to absorb sunlight and photosynthesize, causing them to become weak and unable to whithstand colder temperatures.

Agriculture

Agriculture

stripped nutrients not only affects trees, but all plants too. Acid rain negatively affects agriculture too, if plants are brittle and weak, they will be unable to be sold. This greatly affects agriculture because bussinesses that depend on it will have a much harder time profiting off of their products.
