Biography

Dr. King was born in 1929 in Georgia in a rural family.

Since he was black, he could not go to the same schools as white children.

He attended segregated schools.

He studied law and medicine.

At about age six, one of his white playmates announced that his parents would no longer allow him to play with King, because the children were now attending segregated schools.

Martin Luther King Jr. changed his name from Michael to Martin after his father adopted the name Martin in honor of the Protestant leader Martin Luther.

After his assassination, he was memorialized by Martin Luther King Jr. day, the 3rd Monday in January.

An important message...

Martin Luther King wanted to influence people by his "I have a dream". His message was about equality, freedom, justice and love.

The speech was delivered on the steps of Washington Licoln Memorial after the March on Washington, on 28th August 1963.

King had already survived an assassination attempt in the shoe section of a Harlem department store in 1958.

On 4th April, King, was staying at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. He appeared on the balcony dressed in his trademark dark suit and tie, and he was shot.
