IMpulse Control Disorder

Definition

  • People that cannot resist the urge to hurt themselves or others.

what is it?

It is characterized by impulsivity, which is failure to resist a temptation, an urge or an impulse. There are five behavoral stages; an impulse, growing tension, pleasure on acting, relief from the urge and, guilt. Some types are sexual compulsion, internet addiction, compulsive shopping, pyromania, intermittent explosive disorder, and kleptomania.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of this disorder varies.

Behavioral symptoms:

- Aggression

- Acting out in risky sexual behaviors

-Stealing

-Playing with fire

-Lying

Physical symptoms:

-STDs in adolescents who are participating in risky sexual behaviors

-Burns on the skin of children and adolescents who experiment or

play with fire.

-Injuries resulting from physical fights

Cognitive symptoms:

-Agitation

-Irritability

-Lack of patience

-Difficulty concentrating

-Obsessive and intrusive thoughts

Psychosocial symptoms:

- Low self-esteem

- Social isolation

- Brief periods of emotional detachment

- Depression

-Increased levels of anxiety

-Understand the physchological and physiological components of your impulses

-Repair relationships affected by addiction

- Try to create new and healthy patterns

- Create a treatment plan unique to you

- Identify and treat co-occuring anxiety or depression

Medications to help people with serious impulse related conditions include:

-Antidepressants

-Mood Stabilizers

-Opioid Antagonists

These medications help by addressing symptoms of underlying, seperate mental health disorders that appear in people with impulse related disorders. In addition, they may directly help control impulsive behaviors.
