The MDT involved in pregnancy

Midwife

What is a midwife?

- expert in normal pregnancy + birth

- provide care in hospital + community (GP surgeries + home visits)- same midwife for antenatal care + birth

- deliver baby if normal

Can support if patient has problems with care/ feels their wishes are not being considered

Doctor who speciaises in care during pregnancy

- some hospitals automatically mean you see an obstetrician

Other times, referred by midwife/ GP if they have any concerns e.g. previous complication/ long-term illness

Neonatal Nurse

Nurse specially trained to care for babies who r premature or unwell when born

- usually work within specialist neonatal units in hospital/ community

Sonographers

- trained to carr y out ultrasound scans

- performs the 12, 20 week scans and screening test for Bowns syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Paau's syndrome

Anaesthetist

Doctor who specialises in providing pain relief + anaesthesia

- gives epidurals if requested

- anaesthesia if caesarean section required

Paediatrician

- doctor specialising in care of babies + kids

- may check baby after birth / during birth if labour difficult

Obstetric physiotherapist

- trained to help with physical changes during after pregnancy + childbirth

- some go to antenatal classes- teach exercises etc

- advise on post natal exercises

Health Visitor

- trained nurses who support + educate families from pregnancy to age 5

- Can meet before birth and first few weeks after

- can advise if you develop gestational diabetes or any concerns about special diets or eating healthily
